In order to investigate the risk factors of low birth weight preterm delivery, we reviewed 1996 birth certificated data(673,501 cases: excluded multiple birth) obtained from National Staristical Office of Korea. The logistic regression analysis was used to examine the relationship between preterm delivery, low birth weight and risk factors.
1. The sex ratio was 111.8. The distribution of birth weight was 2.8 percent in low birth weighr(<2.5 kg), and 6.4 percent in large birth weight(>4.0kg). The rate of preterm delivery in total births was 2.7 percent.
2. There were a significant increase the low birth weight(LBW) outcome in group: pretem-delivery(odds ratio(OR) : 41.95, 95% confidence interval(CI):40.47-43.48, p<0.001); women aged 35 and older(OR: 1.33, CI: 1.23-1.43, P<0.001); lst birth order(OR: 1.41, CI: 1.36-1.46, P<0.001). The risk for LBW in father aged 40 and older was higher than under 29 years (OR: 1.31, CI: 1.18-1.46, P<0.001). The risk for LBW increased in wife´s age older than husband as compared with husband;s age older than wife(OR: 1.16, CI: 1.11-1.22, P<0.001). There were association between oarents´ education and LBW. The odds ratio for LBW in under high school graduate than university graduate were 1.26 in father and 1.07 in mother.
3. THe risk for preterm delivery(P/D) in women aged 35 and older was higher than women under 34 years (OR: 1.62, CI: 1.13-1.57, P<0.001). The risk for P/D increased in wife´s age older than husband(OR: 1.20, Ci: 1.15-1.26, P<0.001). The odd ratios of P/D bu infantile sex were 1. 16 male. There was no assocation between P/D ahd birth order. Risk was higher in mother with university graduate(OR : 1.09). On the other hand, risk was higher in father with under high school praduate(OR:1.10)
